Item types, categories and fields
Set up the kinds of items you sell, their categories and fields, and which eBay item specifics each field fills in.

Item types are the kinds of things you sell, like Militaria or Trading cards. Each type has its own categories and fields, which show on the add item form, in Inventory's filters and when you list on eBay. Change them in Settings → Item types.
Only the shop's owner can change item types. Helpers can see the list.
The starter types
Every new shop starts with five:
Trading cards, Sports cards and Video games and consoles count copies, so you can have several of one item.
They're yours to change. Editing them changes nothing for any other shop.
Turn types on or off
The setup wizard's What you sell step turns on the types you tick and turns off the rest. To change it later:
- Go to Settings → Item types.
- Tap the type.
- Tick or untick Turned on.
- Tap Save item type.
A type that's turned off isn't offered for new items. Items that already have it keep it. Types can't be deleted, only turned off.
Add your own type
- Go to Settings → Item types.
- Tap Add a type.
- Give it a Name.
- Add its fields and categories (see below).
- Tap Save item type.
Edit a type
Tap a type in Settings → Item types to change:
- Name
- Turned on
- Several copies of one item: shows a quantity on the item, for things you have more than one of. Each sale takes copies off, and the item is sold when the last one goes. See Several copies of one item.
- Title example: the hint in the title box when you add an item of this type.
Fields
Fields are what you record for this type, besides the title, price and descriptions. Tap + Add a field, then set:
- Label: the field's name, like Grade.
- Kind: Text for anything, or List of choices for a fixed list. For a list, type the Choices, one per line.
- eBay item specific: the name eBay uses for it, like Professional Grader. Leave it empty to use the label.
- Show in item lists, next to the category: lists show this field's value before the category, like
WWII · Uniform.
Use the arrows to change the order, and × to remove a field. A type can have up to 30 fields.
Renaming a field keeps its values on every item that has it. Removing a field hides its values.
Fields as filters
Fields that are a List of choices become filters in Inventory. Pick the type in Inventory, open the filters, and each list field has its own menu, like Any conflict.
Categories
Every type has at least one category. Tap + Add a category to add one, and use the arrows to change the order.
Once a category is saved, it can't be removed, since items may use it. Untick On to stop offering it instead. Keep at least one turned on.
How fields reach eBay
When you list an item on eBay, each field with a value fills in an eBay item specific: the one named in eBay item specific, or the field's label if that's empty. The starter types already use eBay's names, like Card Number for Card #.
It works the other way too. When you import your eBay listings, an item specific with the same name as one of your fields goes into that field. Anything else is kept under Other details.
See List an item on eBay.
Guidance for photo fill
Under Photo fill, Guidance for this type tells Fill in from photos what to look for in the photos: what each category means and how to fill the fields. Every starter type but Other collectibles comes with guidance already. See Fill in an item from photos.
If it won't save
- "You already have an item type with that name."
- "Two categories have the same name."
- "A list field needs at least one choice."
- "Leave at least one category turned on."
- "Every field needs a label."
