How Buy now works

What happens when a buyer taps Buy now on your website, the 30 minute hold, sale pending, eBay, and the emails you and the buyer get.

When a buyer taps Buy now on your website, the item is held for them for 30 minutes while they pay on Stripe's checkout page. Once they pay, it's marked sold, taken off eBay, and put on your pull list.

Available on Pro and Business, and during your free trial. Your website also needs to be published and connected to Stripe.

Which items get a Buy now button

Buy now shows on an item's page when your shop can take payments (see Connect Stripe to take card payments) and the item:

  • has a price as an amount, not text like "Inquire" in Price text,
  • isn't sold,
  • isn't marked Sale pending by you,
  • and has a copy that isn't already in someone else's checkout.

Under the button, buyers see what shipping costs and "Secure checkout by Stripe." Items without a Buy button still have Ask about this item.

What the buyer does

  1. On the item's page, they pick How many if you have more than one copy (up to 10, or what's left). If you ship to more than one country or offer local pickup, they pick Delivery too.
  2. They tap Buy now and go to Stripe's checkout page, under your shop.
  3. They pay by card, or with Link, Stripe's saved payment details. Stripe asks for a shipping address in the country they chose, or none for local pickup.
  4. After paying they come back to your website.

Each order is for one item. Buyers who want several different items pay for each one separately.

The 30 minute hold

As soon as the buyer taps Buy now, the copies they chose are held for 30 minutes. While every copy left is held, the item shows Sale pending on your website, so nobody else can start paying for the same thing.

The hold ends when:

  • the buyer pays: the item is sold;
  • 30 minutes pass, or the buyer goes back from Stripe's page: the item is available again.

The website shows the change within about 20 seconds.

Holding doesn't change your stock. The item stays in stock in Lotmaster until it's paid for.

If it sells somewhere else during the hold

A sale on eBay or one you record yourself always goes through. If that leaves too few copies for the buyer who's paying, their checkout is closed so they can't pay.

If they manage to pay in that moment anyway, the sale isn't recorded. You get an email headed "Refund needed: website payment for" and the item's title, and the order shows in Sell → To review as Card sale to refund. Refund the buyer in Stripe, then tap Refunded, done.

When the buyer pays

  • The sale: the item is marked sold on the Website channel (or loses the copies bought). The buyer is added to People and set as the buyer.
  • eBay: if the item has a live eBay listing, it ends with the last copy, or loses the copies sold. If eBay refuses, the item page says it's Still live on eBay.
  • Your pull list: the sale goes on Sell → To ship with the buyer's address, or marked for local pickup. See Pull, pack and ship orders.

The emails

The buyer gets "Your order from" and your shop's name. It lists what they bought, the shipping or pickup, the total and where it's going. It's sent under your shop's name, and replies come to you. Stripe may send its own receipt too, if you have those on in Stripe.

You get "Sold on your website:" and the item's title. It has the order, the buyer's name and email, the address to ship to (or a note that they're picking it up), and links to the sale in Lotmaster and the payment in Stripe.

Your email, and the buyer's replies, go to your Shop email in Settings → Shop and helpers, or to the owner's email if that's empty.

Where the money goes

The payment goes to your own Stripe account, and on to your bank. Lotmaster takes no fee on it. Refunds and disputes are handled in your Stripe account. See Refunds and disputes.
